lyrics

The Grave of Margaritis

Angel lies face down in the graveyard
Just flappin’ her wings in the cool Autumn breeze
And Margaritis died in 1953
A husband and a father
Oh Lord there was grief
Like you’ve never seen

And all around the clouds
Were promising rain
But what did they bring to the scene
Nothing but shadows
And a too early grave
A too early grave for thee

Do the headstones confound you
The epitaphs they read
“They found their way home one year at a go”
Do you float like a drifter
Or stop at the scene
Aware of the load
They would make you carry
All the way to the end of the line

And all around the clouds
Were promising rain
But what did they bring to the scene
Nothing but shadows
And a too early grave
A too early grave for thee

And the pine trees that point the way home
They offer you no peace at all
And the headstones just sink on their owners
Like they’re tired of standing here too
