lyrics

Newspaper Man

Oh the presses they’re a hummin’ in tongues they’re hissing a warning
What news do they bring from the conqueror’s pen in the dawning?
Whose confidence betrayed? Who’s broken? Who’s made? Who has fallen?
Oh the newspaper man like a snake through the gutters he’s trawling

And the politicians all hang by threads just like puppets they’re swingin’
And the secretaries all in short skirts answer phones that are ringin’
And the unions are crushed ‘neath the wheels of the machine that keeps rollin’
The phone rings in Whitehall, and the walls that stood strong, now lie fallen

With the privilege of birth the young prince had no conscience worth fighting
Well he gambled and drank with the stench and the rank of Old Blighty
When the king fell down dead he returned with a hunger for plenty
Hi. With a fire in his brain that was fuelled by disdain for the gentry

As the years passed/ the door/ before him, the young king knew power like no other
And he conquered the lands that he marched through but he left them in ruin
And he sharpened his knives on the ones he despised without mercy
He’d come for them in the darkness and he’d always fight dirty

And like a high drama queen you can’t stand to not be in the thick of it,
Destroying (people’s) lives with a headline how the hell did you not become sick of it.
Tangled in greed and corruption like a cancer on democracy
A rich man’s son with nothing better to do than to stand around gossiping
