Straight & Narrow

Straight & Narrow
Found a lot of pain in the county jail,
But he put it all behind him now
And he’s living on the straight and narrow
Love’s been good and love’s been bad
Now he’s flying true like an arrow,
Straight to the holy land
Heartbreaker, think you know the score
Break it down like a wrecking ball
Devastator, think you seen it all
But one day the rain’s gonna fall, down on you
Well you had love, call on you
When there was nothin’ good you could find to say or do
When you had love, walk out on you
You tried to start a war, with that black heart
You got beating inside of you, but it didn’t work.
Little hater, who ya gonna call?
When no-one wants you anymore
Guess you better run, a country mile
You can’t bring him down anymore
‘cause he’s living on the straight and narrow
Love’s been good and love’s been bad
Now he’s flying true like an arrow,
Straight to the holy land
Rpt/ solo/ chorus/ solo to end.

Mountain Sound

Mountain Sound
Strong words from a stranger keep me going through the day
Keep me loving in the night, when I wanna stop this fight
Kind words from a lover keep me working without pay
Keep the darkness from the night when I wanna stop this fight
CHORUS
And I do recall something going down
In the heavy stillness of that mountain sound
Solo
Five days on the hammer I was runnin’ out of steam
I was runnin out of dreams
And high up in the mountain where the music flows like wine
I was runnin out of time I was losing my own mind
CHORUS
And I do recall something going down
In the heavy stillness of that mountain sound
Solo
CHORUS
And I do recall something going down
In the heavy stillness of that mountain sound

I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO BELIEVE IN ANYMORE
I don’t know what to believe in, anymore,
Everywhere I look there’s people dyin'
And love’s been shown the door
Don’t know what to believe in anymore
Don’t know what to believe in anymore
I have no faith in the things I been taught
I don’t know what I’m looking for anymore,
The people that I used to now
They don’t live here anymore, where did everybody go
Right before my eyesI
They snuck out, behind my back, and turned out the lights
I seen him, come in the front door, leave out the back
With a smile on his face, and a tippin of his hat
I feel like I been robbed, so I take my wallet out
The place where I used to keep my soul, is just an empty black hole / has been cleaned right out.
SOLO
I know that you been cryin, I can see it in yr eyes,
No point in sayin any different, ain’t no point in denying
What is true, between me and you,
Ain’t nobody’s business, what you decide to do/
And it’s a tired old morning, that ain’t got nothing to say
I walk these streets, but everybody’s staring at their feet
I wonder what they’re looking for, I wonder what they lost
I could offer (you) a solution, but at what cost?

Ruby's Song

Ruby's Song
Ruby lived on Brunswick St, took what she could get
Slept underneath the railway bridge,
When the nights got too wet
The cops were pryin’, and they’d come down hard
When they were feeling it?
She called to me as I walked on by
“Mister, you got a cigarette?”
Big Jim was a gamblin’ man
Lady Luck would hold his hand
But never take him further than the door
Seduce him with temptation you could see the hope
Burning in his eyes
Big man with a big old plan but he just a rolling dice
Can you tell me what it's all about?
Can you help me underdstand?
River keep on running, I watch it pass me by,
Sometimes it’s a long way to the other side
Wheels keep on turning, rollin down the line
Ride on through the darkness to the other side
Mary lives on the outskirts o’ town, in a one room country shack
Filled w nothing but memories (so sad)
She was a wife and a loving momma,
But one night the old man just snapped
Put the kids in the back of the car, and he drove into the lake
Can you tell me what it's all about?
Can you help me underdstand?
River keep on running, I watch it pass me by,
Sometimes it’s a long way to the other side
Wheels keep on turning, rollin down the line
Ride on through the darkness to the other side
I was loaded down with a memory, it was all heartache and pain,
Funny how you can get on the heavy side of everything
I was countin on the break of day, to get me through the night
My mama said just get back up on your horse, and keep on riding
My mama said just get back up on your horse, and keep on riding
My mama said just get back up on your horse, and keep on riding
My mama said just get back up on your horse, and keep on riding

Living In Sin

Living In Sin
Had a little pony called matrimony,
Used to ride her into town every day.
But the girls at the bar, became too hard to resist so I threw it all away
Now I’m livin’ in sin, happy just to be that way
Now I’m livin’ in sin.
Honey won’t you go my way
Had a little jam with the golden man,
But the sky fell down today
Flooded all the streets w moonlight
We just laughed and began to play
A (little) 12 bar man and it was loud
Then I rolled a little number 9
We sat out on the front steps,
Drinkin’ cigarettes and smokin’ wine
And the people passing in the street
All shook their heads in disbelief
We really don’t understand how you can
Live your life this way
Breakdown, followed by dble time solo
Found a little lover to keep me warm at night
And hold my hand,
Told me everything was gonna be alright
She was my woman and I was her man

Blue Hotel

Blue Hotel
She went west with the sun and the gold
And left me standing here all alone
Like a dead end road, with nowhere left to go
Count the stars as they come out one by one
Let the darkness swallow me up whole
Everybody’s trying to forget something
At the blue hotel
Met a girl in the middle of the night, she said she’d love me
But first I had to let her go
So I took her love, and her wine but I still feel so empty
Now I walk these halls movin’ from door to door
Everybody’s trying to forget something
At the blue hotel
Everybody needs someone they can count on, needs someone to love
I hit the city hard, with nothing left to lose
Walking thru this valley of souls, and I know you’re out there
I can smell your perfume on the (cool night) air,
Everybody’s trying to forget something
At the blue hotel

Restless & Sad

Restless And Sad
The city lights shine easy and yr young again inside
There ain’t nothin’ like the night to set you free
And the bars all shout yr name out, say mister where u been
Come in from the cold and grab a drink.
Come in and settle down,
You know it ain’t that bad
But you’re restless and you’re sad
You know it ain’t that bad
You know it ain’t that bad, but you’re restless, and you’re sad
The restless heart is beating grab your jacket and yr smokes
And hail a cab and head downtown
The city lights shine easy and yr young face gives u up
But it ain’t always that bad
The rain slides down to meet you moving easy thru the night
You light a cigarette and step out into the street
But you’re restless and you’re sad
You know it ain’t that bad
You know it ain’t that bad, but you’re restless, and you’re sad

Drop Dead Susie

Drop Dead Susie
Was drop dead Susie who told me what happened to H
The police caught him hidin’ out in a hotel on a Tuesday
See the housemaid saw him in the paper and she called the cops
They stormed his room like he was dangerous, but he was not
They took him to the station said ‘tell us everything you know
Left him with some bruises then they threw him in the hole
The judge gave him 7 years for robbin’ a casino
They came for me on a Monday night it was late
Held me down put a shotgun in my face
They told my mama they was takin’ me away
In the name of justice’ (they said) ‘everybody has to pay’
So I went quietly, told ‘em everything I knew
But I said ‘if you’re trying to make sense, then who ya trying
to make it to’
‘cause there ain’t no point in trying to understand
See some men are born, and they’re whole lives are laid out
before them, and for some, it just don’t ever go to plan
One day Susie just upped and drifted away
I never saw her, or none of them boys again
A lifetime later I was drivin on the Newell, heading north
through Gilgandra
I saw his name on a gate, I thought about turnin’ round and
getting’ some answers
But in the words of a great man, ‘life is sad, and life is bust’
And you gotta keep on movin’ forward or else you’ll just turn
to rust So I put her into gear, and I put the hammer down
And I found someone to keep me warm and I kept on keeping on
And some days are hard, and some days I wish I was dead
But most of the time I manage to keep my head
Yeah - eah - eah, whoa oh.
And I hope those guys made it out alive and they’re doin’ ok
Cause they were friends of mine, and when you’re young
it’s easy to lose your way
And I pray to God that Susie found someone to have a family, and grow old with
Cause this load’s a little easier if you got someone to share it with
‘cause this roads a little easier if you got someone to share it with

Won't Be Back This Way
04:51

I Won’t Be Back This Way
I pawned my case for ten bucks, though I didn’t know my luck had changed
‘til a cold wind blew in from the south and brought the driving rains
There’s sadness where I’m goin’ to and grief from where I came
And I won’t be coming back this way again.
(once more without lyrics)
From the time the sun sets, until the break of day
I will think of you my love, and miss you all the way
But the long road keeps a callin’ me callin’ me away,
And I won’t be coming back this way again
No I won’t be coming back this way again
Bridge
Down this lost highway I’ll be rambling,
Like a rolling dice I’ll be chancing everything to luck
Like that final hand you play, when you got nothing left to lose
And you’re down to your last buck
So from the time the sun sets, until the break of day
I will think of you my love, and miss you all the way
But I won’t be coming back this way again to end
No I won’t be coming back this way again
No I won’t be coming back this way again
Oh baby no I won’t, I won’t be coming back this way again
You know I won’t be coming back this way again..end w/ harp
